5 Tips to Keep Holiday Food from Wasting

The holiday season is a beautiful time for reconnecting with family, being thankful for the times we spend with loved ones and, our personal favorite, delicious food! If your holiday menu is as long as it is appetizing, we have a few tips to make sure no morsel goes to waste.

Go Plant-based for your Main Dish
There are several companies that sell delicious plant-based alternatives to the traditional stuffed turkey. If you’ve never tried Tofurky, this protein is healthier, less greasy and is typically served in a smaller portion. Speaking of which. . . 

Start with Smaller Portions
It may be tempting to load up your plate, but it’s definitely true that your eyes can be bigger than your stomach. Load your first plate with a small serving spoon so you don’t end up tossing out what you don’t eat.


Don’t Leave Without Leftovers!
Bring reusable containers to pack a few to-go plates or, if you’re hosting dinner, make sure to have foil and disposable plates available. This will keep your fridge clean and cut down on what you have to eat when everyone is gone.

Repurpose Your Scraps
Vegetable peels from onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms, sweet potatoes and bell pepper, and chicken and turkey bones make a great base for stock! In a large pot, add enough water to cover your scraps and bring to a boil, then simmer for one hour. Strain the stock to remove solids and freeze for a tasty homemade broth.

Compost the Rest
Composting is simple and returns valuable nutrients to the soil that will aid in plant growth. You can start your own compost or find a composter in your area.
