We’re so proud of everyone’s success with the “Lighten Up Stream” challenge and the commitment you’re all continuing to carry out with your new healthy lifestyles! Keep in mind that as the stress and busy schedule of the holiday season approaches, it can be easy to pack back on the pounds you worked so hard to lose
It’s important to prepare yourself to stay focused during family gatherings and holiday parties, so that you can continue making healthy choices. To help you prepare and stay balanced, Lighten Up Stream nutritionist Melissa McGaughey has shared her helpful tips below.
Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast! Jumpstarting your metabolism in the morning and keeping a regular meal schedule will help keep you satisfied. You will be less likely to indulge in the unhealthy temptations or overeat by the time the holiday meal is served.
Stay hydrated. With all the running around for shopping, decorating, and with all the parties to attend, it’s important to make sure you are staying hydrated. Dehydration causes us to feel sluggish and gives us a false sense of hunger. Shoot for 6 – 8 glasses of water each day and try drinking a full glass of water before holiday meals or attending a party. This will aid in digestion and help you feel satisfied faster, which will relieve the urge to over-indulge in food or alcohol.
Only go for your holiday favorites. Choose reasonable portions of the dishes you love most and leave the others on the table.
Plate everything before you eat. Even if you go back to the snack table for seconds, you’ll be more conscious of the quantities you’re consuming if you see it all on a plate first.
Make healthy food choices but DON’T deprive yourself. Fill the majority of your plate with veggies, leaving less room for meats and high-glycemic carbs, but still allow yourself to enjoy your favorite holiday foods. Use fresh cut veggies for dips instead of chips and try to limit dishes that are full of heavy creams and sauces.
Care for yourself. Don’t forget about you. Holidays are a time for family and giving but if you are overworked, stressed and running around you won’t be able to enjoy the holidays. Keep a positive attitude, try to stick to your normal exercise routine as much as possible, and make sure you are getting enough sleep. These will keep energy levels up, your mind clear, and help you to avoid all of the tempting holiday sweets.
We want to encourage you to keep up the good work! A lifestyle change is never easy, but it’s worth it. Keep Melissa’s tips in mind during the holiday season to help you stay on track with the progress you’ve made.
